How the cast of ‘Saturday Night’ compares to the real people they're playing (2024)

Live from New York, it’s the cast of “Saturday Night.”

Director Jason Reitman’s “thriller-comedy,” as he described it to Vanity Fair, takes place on Oct. 11, 1975, the day of the first-ever broadcast of “Saturday Night Live.”

The film is based on the actual events that unfolded behind the scenes in the tense 90 minutes prior to the pilot episode of the hit sketch comedy series.

Comedian George Carlin hosted the premiere of the show, which featured Billy Preston and Janis Ian as the musical guests.

Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Garrett Morris, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, John Belushi and Laraine Newman were also featured in the episode and later became known as the “Not Ready for Prime Time Players,” per NBC.

Gabriel LaBelle, Dylan O’Brien, Lamorne Morris and others co-star in “Saturday Night,” set to be released in theaters Oct. 11 — 49 years to the day of the events that transpire in the film.

Below, see the cast alongside the real-life figures they portray in the film.

Gabriel LaBelle plays Lorne Michaels, the creator of “Saturday Night Live,” who continues to serve as the series’ lead producer.

LaBelle, 21, recently appeared as Sammy Fabelman in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated semi-autobiographical film “The Fabelmans.”

In an interview with Variety at the magazine’s Power of Young Hollywood event, LaBelle expressed his pride in being a part of the film.

“I saw the movie a couple weeks ago. It’s really good. Jason did such a good job. I’m so proud to be a part of that,” he said.

To prepare for the role, LaBelle reflected on a comment Bill Murray once made to Michaels, per The Hollywood Reporter.

“Everyone sees him as this fearless leader, this captain who’s steering the ship in the fog,” LaBelle said. “Bill Murray, when he came back to host the show 15 or 20 years after he left, said to Lorne, ‘Wow, you really figured out how to do this.’”

For LaBelle, Murray’s comment proved that “nobody knows what to do when they first start,” and that Michaels had to learn over the years.
