Working with what you have…it’s a simple notion, but not always easy for a person like me. Often, when I have a idea I’m not satisfied until I’ve recreated exactly what I see in my head.
In a perfect world I wouldn’t live eighty miles from everything I need. But since I do, I’ve had to learn to be creative with my available materials and supplies. Which brings me to these sharks.
Can you believe that the girl who owns thousands of cutters has only one shark cookie cutter? True story. This is the one from the Wilton Animal Pals set.
It works but I don’t love the fact that it doesn’t have a bottom fin. Instead of hand cutting, piecing, or paying shipping on a single cutter, I decided to make it work.
I sometimes have to remind myself that special cutters aren’t a requirement for exceptional cookies.
Before baking I used the cutter to mark a fin on the unbaked cookie.
You can still see the design after baking. This technique is great for people without a projector because it takes the guesswork out of piping.
Now you’re ready to decorate. To make this cookie you will need:
- Gray piping and flood icing
- White 20-second icing
- Black sugar pearls
Use gray piping icing with a #2 tip to outline the cookie as shown below.
Use white 20-second icing to fill the belly area.
Flood the top portion of the shark and use tweezers to carefully add an eye.
Add gills and pipe around the gray area to finish up. Let dry for 8-10 hours or overnight.
With a little creativity, you can transform even the simplest cutter into something a little more personalized and unique. Color and other cookie designs add even more visual appeal. I used tutorials from some of my favorite cookie decorators to round out this set.
Here are some of my favorites!
Be sure to hop on over to I Heart Naptime and learn how to make simple shark fin cupcake toppers to round out the theme.

These are so cute. The sharks are great but your little surfer boy and the surfboard that was *attacked by a shark* are fabulous. Love your sense of humour (not that getting your surfboard chewed up by a shark is funny but you know what I mean 🙂

I love how you made the cutter work without any hand cutting (which is the pits!). Thanks so much for the link to my shark week cookies! 🙂

OK Callye, you made me squeal so loud this time that my coworkers thought I saw a mouse. These are my FAVORITE cookies you’ve done. I didn’t think I could pick a favorite but these definitely are. They’re just so full of creativity, great colors, humor and my favorite place to be…the beach! Sometimes I’m so glad you live out in the boonies, it gives me the same options if I don’t have the right cutter.
You’re the reason why I started my cookie journey so thank you for that.

See… this set is the very epitome of the outlining genius we were referring to last week. You know exactly where and when to outline so it will accentuate the cookie without overburdening it with unnecessary details.

You cookies are amazing! Always an inspiration (or exact replicate) for my next cookie! 🙂 However, I need HELP! I made your graduation face cookies and the black sugar pearls sort of ‘melted’ into the the faces. Left a ‘black eye’ look. I see you use these on a lot of cookies…any thoughts as to why I am having the problem? Have you had that issue? Thanks in advance for you help! Again, love, love, love your cookies!!!

Maybe the face icing is too wet? Do icing eyes bleed for you?
-
Heidi — June 28, 2013 at 10:36 pm
The icing i used was my best attempt at your ’20 second’ icing…i will try thicker. Icing eyes don’t usually bleed. (but sometimes dark colors do with my piping icing.) I bet things are too runny. It’s also pretty humid here (MN)…could that be a cause? Thanks much for your reply earlier!

Love the shark faces and the surf boards with a shark bite taken out of them! Your techniques of imprinting on per-baked cookies and stenciling on baked cookies has allowed me bring many of my cookies designs to life without a projector. Thanks for sharing your techniques and providing so much inspiration!

Brilliant idea. The cutters can be very helpful in making different cookie shapes which is just so cool. I’d like to see more cutter shapes though aside from the shark design.
