SPINACH STRAWBERRY SALAD

I have major phone envy right now.

I’m not someone who has to have the latest “things”….BUT my husband just qualified for an upgrade on his phone and bought the new IPhone. I want it.

But I’ve been banned from having a nice phone. I go through phones about as fast as I go through butter in my house. In my defense, it’s usually because one of my kids either tried to flush it down the toilet or threw it down the stairs.

My last phone died because it fell out of my “Christy Pocket”, as my friends like to call it, and into the toilet as I leaned over to throw something in the trash. For years I’ve been carrying my phone in my bra. Occasionally my lipstick or credit card will jump in there too but usually it’sjust my phone. It’s awfully convenient since I don’t always have pockets and I’m sure to hear it since it’s always in close proximity.

Not sure when I started using the “Christy Pocket” but I learned from the best…my mom. She’s been holding her lipstick there for years. It’s always shocking when she sneaks it out of there because sheone ofthe most prudish people I know. Ironically, the woman who showed me the ways is the same one whogot afterme for saying the word “bra” in front of my husband when we were dating.

Why not use a purse?I’m not a purse girl*gasp*. I have friends who have entire closets for just their purses so I realize I might have lost you after that last sentence.

Strawberries are really good and cheap now in Florida (not sure about the rest of the states) so I’ve been stocking up. I’m pretty sure strawberry season is year round here. This salad is simple and light. It has fresh strawberries, toasted almonds, and a vinaigrette dressing that is the perfect compliment to the strawberries.

The ingredients are simple: fresh spinach, juicy strawberries, onion, toasted almonds, avocado, and tangy feta or gorgonzola cheese. The homemadesalad dressing is a vinaigrette with poppy seeds.

INGREDIENTS

  • FRESH BABY SPINACH – Or any leafy greens.
  • RIPE STRAWBERRIES – Any fresh berries will work here.
  • SLICED ALMONDS
  • AVOCADO
  • SALTYFETA CHEESE OR GORGONZOLA
  • RED ONION
  • EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL – This is the base of the poppyseed dressing. It’s best to add the dressing right before serving.

VARIATIONS TO THIS STRAWBERRY SPINACH SALAD RECIPE

  • Use raspberries instead of strawberries.
  • Candied pecans are a great alternative to toasted almonds.
  • Don’t like onion? Leave it out.
  • Goat cheese or blue cheese would be great in this salad too!
  • Add some sunflower seeds.
  • Up the protein! Add some cooked chicken breasts.

This is my favorite salad as well! Though the onion is usually sliced thin and in the salad rather than the dressing. I think I’ll try it this way, though, too. Yum. I also like to switch out the strawberries for blackberries or blueberries. But, to me, strawberries are still the best – they’re my favorite food. Like another poster, we still have snow, a foot deep in some places in the yard. So berries are still $3-5 for a package. I can’t wait until this summer when we’ll get out picking so I can make jam.

I stick money in my bra, too. Ha ha. Knew I wasn’t alone…

Try this with candied pecans instead of almonds – Extra Yum!!

  16. Val Reply

Too funny! I guess I have a Valerie pocket! I’m always sticking my phone, cash, credit card, etc. in my bra too… I’m sure there are many others out there just like us!

Anyway, the salad looks awesome!! I love strawberries in green salads with simple vinagrettes… And my kids love them too!

    Thanks for sharing!

Ok you and I are twins seperated at birth. I am not allowed new phones either. My last one I ran over with the car. Yes, you read that right. I had set it on the trunk to buckle the kiddo in. Forgot it and it fell off as we turned the corner on our street. I spent days looking for it only to find pieces of it when I was on a walk. Sigh. ALSO, I don’t carry a purse either AND I have a wallet! Seriously. One more thing, I make this salad too. 🙂

My MIL gave me the baking dish for Christmas. She got a bunch of cute little ones from HomeGoods. Love that place.

  19. buzzkehl Reply

I love the bowl too! Is it a baking dish? details, please!
I just got strawberries from the market and they were terrible, so I need to wait…just a few more weeks, I hope. Looks delicious!

If you really want an iPhone you should look into an otterbox case for it…:) It’s one of the best inventions for phones…though it may make the phone too bulky for your “Christy pocket”….just a thought. By the way I love your blog and recipes. I dicovered it all thanks to a coworker. 🙂 Please keep them coming! 🙂

I love the bowl you put that salad in. It’s adorable!

I’m a blog voyeur and I just love your blog. I am still looking at 2+ feet of snow at my house so really fresh strawberries seem like an eternity away. I love this salad with a maple balsamic dressing though.

  23. Christy {The Girl Who Ate Everything} Reply

    @Melissa,
Yeah, there’s a little more room in my bra these days so it happens more often!
    @jennifurla,
Haha. Ya I get looks when I whip it out too.

    The salad looks great!

And if it makes you feel any better, I dropped my Blackberry in the toilet not too long ago (of course, I told them the sink, since I was mortified at that time…LOL). It happened the same way it did with you. Damn pockets. Thank God for cell phone insurance!

  25. Jennifurla Reply

I have a friend who carries her cell in her bra, I always laugh when she whips it out…her phone that is.

    Lovely salad

I want the iPhone so bad too. But I (Owen) ruin phones so fast that I’m terrified to get one.

Strawberries are cheap here too! I’ve got everything for this salad! I need light and refreshing.

  27. Katie @ This Chick Cooks Reply

Christy, I am laughing/cringing at your story about going through phones. When I got my latest phone before the one I have right now it fell into the bathtub 2 days later… So I totally relate. And, strawberries aren’t in season yet here, but I’d love to make that delicious salad!

I too am longing for that fancy phone…I have the same problem though…me, kiddos, and any type of water don’t do so well!!! I have lost many a phone to the bathtub, washing machine and in even in the cup holder of the stroller when a water bottle fell over and leaked all over it!! UGH!!! Good Luck!

    @Tammy,
Thanks. My friend Barb warned me about that too. I guess that makes sense that it could be giving off something. Thank you. I may have to be a purse girl after all.

one of my favorite salads ever…. i’m excited to try this dressing!

I make this salad often. Strawberries and spinach are available all year round,so it’s like a taste of spring anytime.I highly recommend you try it!

  33. Tammy Reply

Be careful with your Christy pocket and radiation from the phone…that isn’t a good place to carry a cell phone that emits radiation! When my husband carries his for work on his belt, he breaks out in a bad rash every time, he takes it away and the rash goes away…scary! If you do carry it there, make sure the phone pad is facing outward. Thanks for sharing this simple and beautiful salad, I can’t wait for strawberries! I just posted a jello dish yesterday on my blog that can use strawberries, come check it out! daybydaysunshine.blogspot.com

    Christy Pocket? Hilarious!
I made a very similar recipe last weekend–only some of the ratios on the dressing are a tad different. It was so good and fresh! Perfect for this time of year, when our bodies are craving the fruits of spring.
