While the largest source of calcium in the first year of your baby's life should be breastmilk or formula it's never too early to start building up those reserves with calcium-rich foods.
Cow's milk is not recommended before 1 year old, but fermented cow's milk products such as cheese, kefir, and yogurt are great.
So this breakfast overnight oats with yogurt recipe provides a great calcium source as well as good amounts of fat and carbohydrates and all in a healthy, nutritious, and tasty breakfast or snack.
Why we love it?
- 5-minute prep
- Suitable recipe for overnight oats for babies, toddlers, and kids
- High in calcium
Ingredients
- Yogurt - is not only a great calcium source but also contains loads of protein. It is the perfect source of probiotic bacteria which not only help keep the gut healthy but can also boost the immune system. Although plain yogurt contains a certain amount of good probiotic bacteria, if you choose probiotic yogurt, the amount of gut-healthy bacteria will be even greater.
- Oats - requiring no cooking if you just leave them to soak while you get on with whatever else you are doing. They are a great source of complex carbohydrates to keep your baby full as well as fiber to help the digestive system work smoothly.
- Blueberries - high in antioxidants, so can help fight against diseases and improve the overall health of the body. They are also high in vitamins C and K as well as manganese. Whole blueberries are considered a choking hazard for babies and toddlers until the age of 4 so it is advisable to cut them up or mash them before serving. Based on their size, you can either cut them into halves or quarters.
Since we are making overnight oats with yogurt, this recipe is not really intended for baby-led weaning unless you give the baby a spoon to feed themselves.
If you are still doing purees, you can easily puree these Blueberry Overnight Oats and it will taste fantastic for your baby.
So, onto how to make the recipe
1. Place the oats in a bowl and spoon in the yogurt. Allow to soak for at least an hour in the fridge or ideally overnight.
2. When ready to serve, smash or cut up some blueberries (they need to be smashed or cut up for under 4 year olds to avoid any choking hazards) and mix them in the overnight oats.
3. Serve to baby in a bowl so they can scoop it by themselves or on a pre-loaded spoon. For toddlers you can use this ergonomic cutlery.
FAQ
Can a 6-month-old eat overnight oats?
Yes. A baby can start eating oats from day 1 of weaning. And overnight oats as well. Ideally, you would soak overnight oats for a 6-month old baby in breastmilk but if that is not a possibility, yogurt and kefir are a great option. Plant-based milk can also be a choice but since it is not as nutritionally valuable as breastmilk, yogurt, or kefir, I would suggest adding some nut butters in as well.
At what age can I give this to my baby?
This meal is suitable for babies from the age of 6 months. Even though new weaning recommendations state that you no longer need to introduce foods one by one into your baby's diet I do recommend otherwise. Not because you can cause your baby harm by not introducing them day by day, but because in case of any allergic symptoms you can easily distinguish the food that might be the cause.
Can oats cause constipation in babies?
Rolled oats with no added sugars, oils, and preservatives shouldn't cause constipation. On the contrary, they are a great food to help digestion. Processed and industrial cereals and ready-to-eat oatmeal however could be the cause of constipation so I would suggest you avoid these.
Can I use any type of oats?
Yes, but rolled oats are the best option. Simply because they are the easiest to prepare and serve to your baby. Whole oats need to be cooked for a long period of time and even then the baby might not be able to chew them between their gums.
Recipe Variations
- Use probiotic-rich kefir instead of yogurt
- Make it dairy-free by using a dairy-free yogurt such as coconut yogurt or almond yogurt
